Well the Start of the video is the whole video sped up into 9 seconds and in reverse, to start the track. it starts with the band at either the junction or some other location, Maybe even outside somewhere, but the Limitations of that would be that we could not get a drum kit outside.
There will be a few shots of members of the band either looking at photos or just showing them to the camera, which will then zoom in of random clips involving different band members with it fading out to static.
to maybe enhance the fact of being alone, they will seem like they are at a gig, with all the lights and stuff, but there are "crowd" shots which shows that the whole place is empty, like nobody showed up, like the concept of being alone.'
Here is Matt L's pitch for our music video project, we each did a pitch so we would have more ideas if any of them did not work out as well as we hoped, also to show we have not just had one solid idea - it also shows progress. I think the pitch is good, and especially like the idea of nobody being at the bands gig, which have clear relevance to the lyrics to the song.
I think this could be excellent if we made it look realistic - and would be a twist to the normal indie band music video scenario. This also links back to my previous post of some advertisement posters, we could have some of the band's gig advertisement posters around the junction, which would add emphasis to the fact nobody would be at the live gig.
Here I have researched how to do a certain transition on Final Cut, which is fast forwarding and slowing don some footage on Final Cut, this appears quite simple, but the idea we have for the video is apparently quite hard to create.
I think could be effective in our music video. I am not sure if any music videos feature this, but the idea is to have the main singer of the band in a busy street, walking towards the camera. We would then have the various people around him fast forward so that they appear to be moving at a very fast pace, and we would have the main singer on a slower transition so that he appears to be the main attraction in the shot.
I have spoken to Matt L about this and he says the only way he can think of to try and create this kind of effect would be to have 3 split screens in final cut, the people either side of the main singer as a split screen and the main singer as a split screen, but this is apparently quite hard. If we could pull the effect off it would be a great transition to have in the music video and I think it could be a good idea.
For an idea for a secondary venue if we cannot use The Junction, I think my old secondary school will be well suited. It has a clear stage which we could use and lighting, and I am sure they would be willing to let me film there, I would just need to ring and ask and if accepted to confirm, which I will do at a later date if it turns out there may be a problem with the junction.
The only problem I can foresee with the junction is time, as Im not sure when they will be free, and if so for the time we would like. Our main singer works every day until 4, so if they are free to use this late this will be good, but we will need at least 2 hours to shoot which could be a potential problem as things could be happening at night time. I do not know any other singer that would be willing to do something like this so a change of venue will be a back u plan should we need one.
Above is a picture of the junction nightclub, which is a possible venue to use in our music video. We may film in other places, such as busy streets or perhaps some various places to get lots of variation in shot areas - as we know one area shot can get boring. Alternatively, we may just film from the junction but have 5/6 different types of camera angle but I don't think this would be as effective.
We are hoping to use the stage at the junction for the music video, so the band appear to be playing an actual gig at the junction. A good idea to also do is to create some 'fake' advertisement posters to advertise the band and on the day we are filming stick them up around various places, such as the junction advertisement walls, as shown above - and we could have a few shots of these for establishing shots. Various advertisement posters are posted above, some off image sharing website and the top three pictures taken myself of the advertisement posters at The Junction.
Here is the practice video which Matt L and I did to the song 'Feeder - Feeling a moment'. We used pictures from facebook and the song we would like to use and tried to match them up to the pictures. They were only various images and it was just a practice to help with the pitch on wednesday, it was just a quick session so therefore will help us in terms of the song.
In the actual video, we'll have shots of the band too so obviously its not just pictures, hopefully it will be effective. We exported the music track from keepvid.com from the youtube URL and then got the music and added it to final cut, then we added the various images.
In the music video project, I am up to doing the specific planning for the music video, with quite a clear idea and people to represent the band.
I still need location shots of the junction and to clearly explain to the main singer in the band what he needs to do, and I still need to find a guitarist and drummer for the band, but it is possible that the main singer can play guitar too - I have a few people potentially who can do this.
We also need to shoot the video, and have a rough cut by a certain date. We need a shot to shot list which will help us, and need to create a presentable and effective music video with our ideas.
In terms of planning for the music video, the pitch in the below blog should help but in terms of specific details I'll try to explain this as best I can. The video will include pan shots of the camera and panning shots of the band, the junction will be the main venue and therefore most shooting will be filmed there. The music video will show extreme close up shots of the band, close ups, medium long shots and establishing shots. The singer of the band will be the main camera attraction but there will also be perhaps 2/3 other members in the band, such as a drummer, guitarist etc.
Here I will write a music video pitch for my video, with the ideas I like and hope to create etc.
'Indie style video with all the characteristics, possible venue at junction or school stage with clear establishing shots, long shots, mid close ups and extreme close ups to create a sense of loss. The songs lyrics 'Feeling a moment slip away' are relevant, video will have a band performing hopefully on a stage but the main singer will be the main attraction. Perhaps some shots of a couple or significant moments in the singer's life in which he remembers - these could then fade away with transitions and could be symbolic in this way. It will have shots of the band, instruments, and will perhaps show a slight story although not a very prominent one. Camera pans around the band and location from various angles and will all help to create a sense of loss and slight loneliness. Video will promote the band and their new upcoming video.'
On this post there are also a few pictures of some camera angles I like for an indie type video, the pictures are from the popular song 'Razorlight - America' Unfortunately this embed code was disabled by request too, so see the video here.
I like the close up shots of the main singers face and some of near the microphone, one kind of similar to an over the shoulder shot with the microphone. I also like the other establishing shots of the band, a long shot of them in the studio and also the pictures of the drums, the players feet on the drum pedals.
These shots are similar to the ones expected from an indie style video, they are characteristics of an indie style video, which I have explained in previous posts. I hope to use some angles such as this in my video as it is a similar style of music so should get a good effect hopefully.
This will be the music track for my music video, which is called Feeder - Feeling a Moment'. A video analysis is posted on the below posts about it, Similar videos I think to the one above are posted below. They include 'Snow patrol - Run' (for this one embedding was disabled on request, so find that video here) 'Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars (find that video here).
one I found really interesting, is a Snow Patrol video that is one tracking shot throughout the whole song, and tracks through desolate streets - but somehow never becomes boring. Snow Patrol - Open Your Eyes.
Above are pictures which show that we have asked permission from the band 'Feeder' to use their music video track 'Feeling A Moment', we are still awaiting the reply and if we get a response we will post at a later date, but it is quite unlikely as the band probably receive thousands of emails a day and do not look through all of them.
From the picture you can also see I asked permission for another band's music, but this was earlier on in the process when I was thinking of using a different band, either way it does show I have asked permission from the band.
"Feeling the moment slip away
Losing direction you're losing faith
You're wishing for someone
Feeling it all begin to slide
Am I just like you
All the things you do - can't help myself
How do you feel when there's no sun
And how will you be when rain clouds come and pull you down again
How will you feel when there's no one
Am I just like you
Turning to face what you've become
Bury the ashes of someone
Broken by the strain
Trying to fill that space inside
Am I just like you
All the things you do - can't help myself
How do you feel when there's no sun
And how will you be when rain clouds come and pull you down again
How will you feel when there's no one
Am I just like you
All the things you do
Don't ever feel
That you're alone
I'll never let you down
I'll never leave you dry
Don't fall apart
Don't let it go
Carry the notion
Carry the notion back to me
Feeling the moment slip away
Feeling the moment slip away
Cause I'm just like you
How do you feel when there's no sun
And how will you be when rain clouds come and pull you down again
How will you feel when there's no one
Am I just like you?"
Here are the lyrics for the song I am considering as the song for my music video, the song is called 'Feeder - Feeling a moment' I think the lyrics are quite good for the kind of video we need, and as explained in the previous post I have thought of a nice transition of a fade out and to blend tw ovideos together which will go with the first line of lyrics 'Feeling a moment slip away..' which I think will work quite well if i use the song above and if I decide to use the transition.
While at Coleridge we all chose a video, film, or still image and found an effect that we liked and hoped to use in our video. For ours, you can see the effects we liked posted in the previous blog. However while listening to everyone's ideas after going round and looking, I had quite a good idea for our music video.
Because the lyrics of one of the songs I am considering using are 'Feeling a moment slip away..' I thought for the video we could maybe blend two videos together, and then fade one out. We could have significant moments from the main singer's life, blend them together and then fade them both out.
We could use a transition in After Effects which would allow us to do this. It is quite hard to explain but I think this effect could be good in the video if we use the song 'Feeling A Moment'. I thought this idea could help in the process I have went through to get to my finished video.
In terms of creative effects, Me and Matt found an effect we like while looking through videos. We looked at a Paramore video called Fences, which I have posted already on my blog and have done an evaluation about it.
These two effects are both the same in the video but are very effective. As you can see from the pictures, the effect holds a fade in style with two different parts of video embedded into each other in order to create the effect.
I think its very effective as it shows two different parts of a story for the video. This would be an effective transition to use in the music video we do which would show two sides of the story for the video.
On Monday morning we were shown a few student videos from media A2 groups from the previous years. It was very interesting to see some student work from long road, and considering I had researched some videos off youtube I had actually found a video from Youtube which was from long road two years ago. I didn't know this at the time but thought the video was well made and effective.
We were shown a few videos, one which featured a electro kind of video, called 'DJ's got a gun'. It did not have a main artist but a few various ones - and I think this would make the video harder to do as you are not simply focusing on one person. They had used a lot of effects such as flashing text. coloured backgrounds etc and this was because apparently they had run out of time. The video was effective but at some times was a bit confusing.
We were also shown two other videos which were attempts at copying an indie band style genre video. They were both effective and showed how camerawork, lighting and confident actors play a big part in the final outcome of the video in order for it to be effective.
This was also a video discussed in class during the last few months at the start of our music video project. We had a lesson with Barney in which he showed us a video directed by the infamous Michel Gondry, for the Chemical Brothers. The video is called 'Star Guitar'.
I had forgotten the name of the video so asked again what it was called, otherwise I would have added it earlier. I think this video is one of the best i've seen, literally everything that happens in the video matches with the music track excellently. I have never seen this kind of video and to watch it the first time in class was pretty impressive! It makes it crystal clear that Michel Gondry is truly an excellent director and nothing less.
The video is simply an extended train ride but after watching closely the meaning behind the video becomes clear. Every building, lamppost, telephone line, train, tree, hill etc matches with a beat, pulse or rhythm in the music - this is a dark horse of Gondry's videos. While most favour his 'Fell in love with a girl' animation video or the infamous Kylie Minouge one, many fail to see how much effort, time, preparation and editing this must have taken in order to create such a video.
I thought it would be interesting to post something about album covers, since they focus in our music video project and we ourselves will have to create and promote one for our band or artist in our music video. Below is also a video where Temper Trap performs live and talks about they're musical influences and the start up to a band.
After watching the Temper Trap video, I then done some research on some further songs and the band themselves as I thought it would be interesting. Public image is very important for any new starting band and how they are promoted is vital.
During the brief sent to Jake and Jim about the 'Sweet disposition' video, it was mentioned to promote the band but not a huge extent, this was the bands first video and it was crucial that both the video was not over the top in promotional value and that the video demonstrated the right image.
From the pictures above, it is clear the band is new and upcoming, with lots of tours posted on the official website www.thetempertrap.net, and various songs posted on Myspace (www.myspace.com/thetempertrap) for new fans to have a listen to them. There is also some background information about the band on their site, where they come from, how they originated etc. Here is a rough paragraph I found on research website Wikipedia.
"The Temper Trap are a rock band from Melbourne, Australia. They are noted for their atmospheric sound, featuring grand guitars set to pulsating rhythm"
Here is the music video for the band Temper Trap, which i realise we did some research on earlier in the year with Jake and Jim, very similar to an actual pitch for a music video. I thought it would be very interesting video as it shows each process of a music video and the thoughts, ideas and cost involved.
At this time the video had not been started on and Jake and Jim gave us the opportunity of pitching an idea for the video, after listening to the song and doing a brainstorm. We worked in groups of 3 or 4 and were to come up with an actual pitch. After listening to the music, It was clear it was going to be popular.
Jake and Jim also mentioned the record companies first couple of ideas, such as a girl in rollerskates skating in a runway of a plane. They claimed it would start with a flashing light from the darkness, which would slowly expand into a plane runway with the lights being very prominent. It was clear this was the beginning of the video that the record company were quite adamant on this.
It is interesting now to see the video in full flow, and undeniably it looks great, although Jake and Jim did not get the commission in the end. In our groups we had a few ideas and I think our groups idea was quite humorous, that the girl in rollerskates appeared to be the main singer in the band. Perhaps something more serious would have been a better approach! Jake and Jim liked all of our ideas and it was interesting to get some interesting feedback from two producers, including how the music video industry worked with time, money, staff etc too.
From first ever listening to the music video all that time ago it was clear it had a cosmic feel to the music and I think some groups may have suggested something to do with space too as ideas. From the pictures it is easily clear that space features a lot in this video, and after watching it again I have noticed that the light in the middle of the screen at the start remains throughout the video, though it is not very noticable until closely watched throughout. Jake and Jim also said to us that the women who commisssioned them to make Temper Trap's video mentioned that the video needed to be fairly simple and to promote the new band but not to a huge extent.
Yet again it really is interesting to see how the finished product turned out after being involved in the idea process, it really shows how ideas for a music video can progress and change from the beginning thought process. I know my ideas have already evolved immensely from when I originally heard we were doing a music video, they have evolved from a dance video to a more indie feel video featuring a band, after extensive research on characteristics of a music video genre.
There is no doubt that the video cost a considerable amount of money to create. At the end of it all, Jake and Jim were not given the commission but still being involved in the initial idea process and feedback from actual directors was overall very helpful.
Below is the completed video for the new band 'The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition'.
